Marshall County looking for buildings to double as storm shelters

MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

As we enter into severe weather season in a few months' time, the Marshall County Emergency Management Agency is looking for a few good buildings to help the community be prepared.

The county EMA has worked hard to get community shelter grants that have been placed all around the county. However, that is not enough, so they are looking for storm-ready buildings.

Storm shelters will of course come in handy during times of tornadoes or other severe weather, but Marshall County EMA Director Anita McBurnett said there's just not enough of them to help keep residents safe, particularly those who live in mobile homes.

For the last few years, they have had a few locations such as St. William Catholic Church in Guntersville that have been on a list to open in case of severe weather to give shelter to those who need it. McBurnett is seeking other churches or buildings to go on the list so residents will know where to go.

McBurnett hopes to have a final list available to resident by March 1. If you have a building you can make available, you are asked to contact the Marshall County EMA.
