Bar at center of shooting will remain closed without licenses

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville's Chief of Police said that a bar involved in a weekend shooting cannot and will not re-open unless its liquor licenses are reinstated. Right now, both of those licensed are suspended and it would be up to the bar's owner to appeal that decision.

A shooting at Benchwarmer last weekend injured five people, including several minors and a security guard. A 15-year-old is charged with the crime. It is not the first act of violence at the bar; there have been a number of shootings and stabbings in recent years that ended with injuries and even a fatality.

The Huntsville police chief has suspended the bar's city liquor license out of safety concerns. The Alcoholic Beverage Control board suspended the bar's state liquor license – both of which the business needs to operate.

"You had a situation in the bar where five people were shot and there were several juveniles involved, which indicated there may be some violations in the operation of the club. It was my decision to suspend their license until we find out exactly what's going on," said Chief Lewis Morris.

Morris said there is a hearing scheduled with the ABC board in March, where the business owner can apply for a new license. He can also go before the city for the same purpose, but unless the owner makes those appeals, the bar will remain closed.
