Red Cross app guides first aid for pets

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A new smartphone application from the American Red Cross can help pet owners check the health of their animals and handle medical emergencies.

The Pet First Aid app, which includes information on cats and dogs, provides instructions on dealing with common medical problems like bleeding and food poisoning.

Users can also program contact information for their veterinarian and look up locations like pet-friendly hotels.

"Pets are part of our family, so this is really a great tool to not only help you recognize and respond to medical emergencies with your pet, but also has a lot of great preparedness information to help you protect your pet after a disaster," said spokesperson Beth Toll.

The Red Cross demonstrated the app at their Nashville headquarters Thursday. For example, a towel and bottle of water can be used to help cool an overheated dog.

The app costs $.99 and is available in the Google Play and iTunes stores.
