Woman says she lost 33 pounds by drinking her veggies

Kristy Michael had tried to lose weight for three years with no success until six months ago.

Michael received a "Vitamix" high-performance blender as a gift and decided to try nutrition smoothies.

She uses leafy greens like kale, and adds fruit like berries, apples and banana. Then with the push of a button, all the produce is pulverized into a thick smoothie.

Michael says the smoothies are satisfying and the variety has allowed her to stick with it.

She replaces one meal a day, usually breakfast, with a smoothie. That, along with overall healthy eating has allowed her to lose 33 pounds.

"I've lost 8 and a half inches from my waist, 7 [inches] from my abs and 7 [inches] from my hips," Michael said.

She says she seen a difference in the health of her hair and skin too.

'I think I've seen a difference in my skin, my hair, just everything," she says about feeling healthier. "It's not just some magic overnight transformation where one day you wake up and think, 'Oh, that looks better.' It's just over time, you look back in photos and see, you look healthier."

Michael and her husband run a travel website called longlonghoneymoon.com.

They are on the road four months out of the year where eating healthy can be hard. On their last junket, the blender came with them.

She believes her commitment to incorporating the nutrition smoothies no matter where she is made a big difference in her success.

"I think the biggest thing for me was finally realizing, it can't be a diet. It has to be a lifestyle change," Michael says.

There are endless combinations for smoothies, usually using leafy greens and fruits as a base. You can kick it up with protein powder, nuts, seeds or peanut butter.

Michael consults websites for recipes and the variety has helped her stick with it.

UAB Nutritionist Dr. Beth Kitchin sees no downside in drinking your fruits and veggies.

"It's convenient," says Dr. Kitchin. "It helps people to get 3-5 servings of fruits and vegetables in one drink that they normally would not have gotten if they had to cook them and eat them."

What about the claims that smoothies from high performance blenders improve health and well being and allow nutrients to be absorbed better than whole fruit?

Dr. Kitchin doesn't buy it.

"When they're making that claim, they're not basing that on any scientific study at all," says Dr. Kitchin.

She says be realistic, don't expect overnight change.

Michael knew her weight loss would be slow and steady. It took her over six months to lose 33 pounds and she thinks her daily smoothies were a big part of her success.

She encourages people to give smoothies a try.

"Everybody's different and you have to just keep tweaking and working with it to find what is going to be the change for you that's going to make a difference," says Michael.
