Inmate shows up to court too high to stand

Updated:

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Records show an Orleans Parish Prison inmate has shown up for court three times too doped up to stand for his appearances, prompting court-ordered drug testing and an investigation at the jail.

After the inmate had to be held upright by a deputy during a hearing Monday, Judge Frank Marullo questioned lawyers and medical staff about his impairment, before ordering drug testing.

Officials say the inmate, 30-year-old Willis Turner, tested positive for opiates, a class of drugs that includes heroin and prescription pain pills. Sheriff Marlin Gusman's office said an investigation into how Turner got ahold of drugs is underway.

Turner has been in jail since February, awaiting trial on charges of attempted murder and violating his parole.
