NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Nashville is certainly a guitar town, but that nickname goes far beyond the musicians who can just pick up an instrument and play.

Paul Heller doesn't know the difference between a C-chord and a D, yet guitars now consume his life by way of his gorgeous artistic creations.

"I wish I could play the guitar, but I have no musical talent," Heller said.

His guitars - made of stained glass with a mosaic riff - hang high inside many of Nashville's hotels, bars and nightclubs.

None of what he makes actually makes music, but they do have a voice of their own. Putting one of his creations together is an intricate process that combines carpenter skills and an eye for detail.

"Artists are perfectionists. We tend to see things that no one else will ever see," Heller said.

A few years ago, Heller's kids were grown and out of the house when the empty-nester had some new-found free time.

"There's an opportunity to reinvent yourself," Heller said.

He signed up for an art class, liked it and got right to work.

"I'm a very passionate person, and if you are passionate, there's no limit to what you can do. And I just took that passion and really have fallen in love with becoming an artist," Heller said.

Before he became an artist, Heller's career took him in a variety of directions. Electrical engineering, hotel operations and even time as a university professor are all part of his professional palate.
