MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

The doctors and nurses at Urgent Medcare in Madison have been busy with flu cases.

"They complain of body aches, chills, fever, cough. You can pretty much tell right off," said Nurse Coordinator Kathy Harper.

"We used to see about 50% of patients with flu each day for two to three weeks," added Dr. Ivan Pivovorov.

The Alabama Department of Public Health reports that flu activity across the state is high and its proliferation is widespread this season, and sure enough, the grueling H1N1 Type-A is the strain Alabamians seem to be catching the most.

As the bug causes misery and even deaths across the state, patients are also scrambling to get their flu shots. "When they see the numbers on the TV, they want to come in and get a flu shot to avoid getting the flu as well," said Harper.

Dr. Pivovorov said some patients still do catch the flu even after they've gotten vaccinated, but that he struggles to reassure them they can't catch it from the vaccine itself.

"A lot of people have the misconception that the flu shot causes symptoms. They say [they] always got sick after a flu shot, which, really, it does not work that way," he said.

These professionals said they expect the current outbreak is not over yet and could continue through February or even into March. "We're going to be busy, at least for a few months, for a few weeks," the doctor said.
