Sheriff: 7 armed men snatched innocent child, left her on side of road

ORANGEBURG, SC (WCSC/WIS) - Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell was blunt in his assessment of the suspects who allegedly took a 4-month-old child from a home on Catamount Road, calling them "cowards".

Ravenell says seven armed men pushed their way inside the residence shortly before 4 p.m. and forced three adults and six juveniles to the floor.

The sheriff then says the child was taken while her 52-year-old grandmother tried to protect the child from the suspects.

The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office says they were moments away from initiating an AMBER Alert for the child when the child was located in Berkeley County.

According to the Berkeley County Sheriff's deputies, the 4-month-old child was located on the side of a road in the area of Highway 176 and Highway 311.

Authorities with the Moncks Corner Rural Fire Department say the baby was checked out by EMTs at the scene and was not injured.

"This is an ongoing investigation and evidence at this time indicates that this was not a random act of violence. We will locate the cowards who entered the residence and snatched an innocent child from their family and later discarded the helpless child on the side of a road," said Ravenell. "We are continuing to interview witnesses, collect evidence, and will be working with all available resources to bring these individuals back to Orangeburg County to stand for the charges they have committed against this family."

Meanwhile, the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office is searching for a red Chevy Impala and a green Ford Explorer in connection with this incident.
