HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

An urgent call for blood has gone out across North Alabama.

LifeSouth Community Blood Centers said Tuesday there is an emergency need for blood donations, especially for people with O-, A-, and B- blood types. These specific blood types are necessary because fewer people have negative blood types, and they can be transfused to people with positive blood types as well.

"The freezing weather arrived, causing blood donations to hit an annual low, and we're continuing to battle to catch up," said Vice President of Operations J.B. Bowles.

Bloodmobiles were out in force in the Tennessee Valley collecting blood from as many donors as possible. Officials say it is never too late to donate, and you don't have to wait for a donation event to give.

Donors must be 17 or older (16 with parental permission), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good health. A photo ID is also required.
