HSV Airport incentives met with opposition

Tuesday the Airport Authority board met with representatives from each airline.

The board agreed to modify its incentive package. It will offer it even if the airlines don't meet the requirements until March 1.

The incentives include cheaper landing fees if the airline reduces baggage claim times and provides faster service.

The program is voluntary and there are no penalties for not participating. However, some airlines said this could mean added costs. The board has agreed to meet individually with each airline to discuss possible changes.

The airlines said they will take legal action if an agreement isn't met by the time the requirements kick-in on March 1.

They also announced that the average delivery time for customers' bags upon arriving at the airport has improved by 27 percent year over year. Which means all airlines take no more than 15 minutes for bag delivery.

"We're looking for a win-win and that was stated here today by the airlines," said Huntsville Airport Executive Director Rick Tucker. "It gives us time to further explore and address our community's concerns."

Passenger traffic also increased 4.1 percent in Dec. 2013 compared to Dec. 2012.
