DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

The Sears store in Decatur will close to the public in mid-April. Until then, the store will remain open for customers.

The store has 91 employees. Those who are eligible will receive severance and be able to apply for open positions at area Sears and Kmart stores, said Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for Sears Holdings. Most of the store's employees are part-time hourly workers.

He said the store is being closed because the lease in the Decatur Mall was not renewed.

"Store closures are part of a series of actions we're taking to reduce ongoing expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model," Riefs said. "These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail -- at the store, online and in the home."

The store began a liquidation sale on Jan. 10.
