MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama First Lady Dianne Bentley stood with officials from One Place Family Justice Center, the Family Sunshine Center and Zonta of Montgomery at the Alabama Capitol Friday.

In front of the crowd, dozens of empty shoes.

The event was an effort to show support for those affected by domestic violence and to raise awareness for National Stalking Awareness Month.

The shoes commemorated the lives of those lost to domestic abuse.

This is the 10th year of the awareness month. Officials with the Stalking Resource Center estimate more than 6.6 million Americans are stalked each year.
