GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A new park in Guntersville has led to the city receiving a big award.

Mayor Leigh Dollar said she is excited by the new accolade, which she was notified of earlier this week. She said the park is on track to become the centerpiece of the town's new entertainment district.

The City of Guntersville received the Quality of Life award for its construction of Errol Allan Park and Entertainment Venue. The park was built this past summer on the site of a building that was destroyed by fire in 1999. The nearly $400,000 park opened in July.

Since then, some large crowds have gathered at the venue for several live acts that have performed as part of a concert series held by the Mountain Valley Arts Council. This led to the passage of the entertainment district by the Guntersville City Council, with the park becoming a focal point for art, entertainment, and residents.

The park has also been used by the local library to showcase movies in the park after dark.

The entertainment district got off to a slow start, with its opening weekend hampered by inclement weather.

The City of Athens won the Quality of Life award for larger cities. Athens landed the honor for opening the area's first compressed natural gas filling station.

The CNG station opened in September. It is the only one located between Birmingham and Nashville. City leaders said it's a way of saving money while going green; one dollar of CNG matches the mileage of one gallon of gasoline.
