SCOTTSBORO, AL (WAFF) -

A Scottsboro man wanting to get his paycheck a little early found himself behind bars. He confessed to stealing his own paycheck, but it is what he allegedly did afterward to cover it up that has landed him in so much hot water.

29-year-old Jeremy Anthony Pritchett of Scottsboro has now been charged with third-degree burglary and first-degree theft charges.

American Landscaping in Scottsboro reported the break-in last Friday. A laptop computer, monitor, security system, cash, and the company payroll checks were stolen. Company officials went to the bank to cancel the checks. It was then learned that Pritchett's check had already been cashed, and the company's own employee became the prime suspect.

"At that time he ended up confessing that he had taken the check a day earlier and the next morning became worried about what may happen to him with the job, so he decided to stage a burglary to try to cover his tracks for taking the check a day early," said Scottsboro Police Lieutenant Scott Matthews.

Most of the stolen items were recovered. Pritchett is being held without bond due to a probation revocation on a previous charge.
