DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

Authorities in Decatur are warning residents about a phone scam targeting Decatur Utilities customers.

A business owner told police she was the victim of a scam after receiving a call from a 1-800 number claiming that she did not pay enough money on her utility bill and that her power would be turned off. The caller then gave specific instructions on how to pay the money, which the victim said sounded suspicious.

According to utility officials, both homeowners and businesses have been targeted in the scam.

Decatur Utilities said they do not contact customers for payment over the phone and that money should be paid directly to Decatur Utilities.

If you have question about your Decatur Utilities bill you're asked to call the company's customer service at 256-552-1400.
