Sign spinner draws a crowd in Decatur

DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

Spinning... twirling... You name it, Andy Atkins can do it. His "arrow sign" is part of a type of advertising; in this case, for a new Decatur branch of the Planet Fitness chain. "The company is actually called Arrow Advertising, and it started in California about 10 years ago," said Atkins.

Local businesses call the company and request someone like Andy to stand at busy intersections and do their thing. Andy is about to enter his third year with the company.

"It's been great. I get an opportunity to travel, which is always good. For a while I was going almost every weekend to Tupelo," said Atkins. "A friend of mine who works for the company got to go to the Bahamas, I think, to spend like 2 hours."

Also amazing, he said, is the feedback he gets from people who watch him.

"It's been great because this is an area that isn't really as familiar with sign spinners," Atkins explained.

We caught some folks stopped at a red light on Highway 67 who were watching Andy spin.  All of them thought he was awesome.

Local resident Megan Rucker is familiar with sign spinning. "He reminds me of an old friend of mine. I'm from Ohio and he reminds me of a girl that I know. She does it for Little Caesar's and she is good - just like him. That's awesome. He should be on American Idol!"

Andy said he will keep spinning and traveling as long as he can... even beyond Bobby's Bama.
