One person killed in Richmond house fire

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Firefighters are working to determine what caused a house fire that killed one person in the city's North side.

Firefighters tell us the flames broke out around 12 a.m. Wednesday in the 3200 block of North Avenue, just off West Gladstone Avenue.

Investigators say the two story building is separated into two apartments, and the fire broke out in the kitchen in the upstairs unit. Crews were able to get the fire under control quickly and several people made it out safely. Once firefighters went inside, they found the victim in the upstairs unit.

People living in the downstairs unit are being assisted by the Red Cross.

Investigators are still working to determine the age and gender of the victim.
