BATON ROUGE, LA (RNN) - Good defense and superior shooting helped Tennessee soundly defeat LSU 68-50 on the road on Tuesday night.

The Volunteers (10-4, 1-0 SEC) and the Tigers (9-4, 0-1) played a close game until Tennessee started pulling away with more than six minutes left in the first half, which ended 38-24. The Vols continued to dominate in the second half, never losing the lead, which grew to as many as 20 points. Even though LSU led with nine steals and nine blocks, Tennessee limited the Tigers to just 26 points in the second half.

The Vols had a great night shooting, making 46 percent of their field goals, 53 percent of their 3-pointers and 80 percent of their free throws. LSU made 37 percent of its field goals, 14 percent of its 3-pointers and 57 percent of its free throws.

Jordan McRae led the Volunteers with 19 points, five assists and one block. Jarnell Strokes had four steals and 15 rebounds, including his 25th career double-double.

For the Tigers, Jordan Mickey led with 14 points and five blocks. Johnny O'Bryant III, the team's leading scorer with an average 14.6 points per game, added just 11 points but led with seven rebounds.

The game marked the start of conference play in the Southeastern Conference.

This was the Vols' sixth consecutive win over the Tigers and their first true road win of the season. The game was also LSU's second straight loss at home.
