Overnight fire destroys home, puts ETX family out in cold

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - An overnight fire ripped through a Smith County home early Tuesday morning.

Crews from Arp, Whitehouse and Chapel Hill responded to the blaze, which broke out around 12:30 AM on the 10000 block of Lakeshore Drive near Chapel Hill.

Three residents and a family dog all escaped the home unharmed.

The homeowner said the entire family was asleep at the time, when he woke up because his CPAP machine was not working. At that time, he realized electricity in the house was off. He walked towards the circuit breaker in the garage, flipping the switch multiple times with no results. At that time, he said he began smelling smoke.

Around the same time, neighbors ran to the residents' door and alerted them that fire was shooting through the roof near the home's chimney.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to a fully engulfed home with a collapsed roof. Crews were able to completely put out the fire in about two hours.

Investigators have not yet released an official cause for the fire, but said they are looking at two possibilities. The homeowner told investigators that the family had a fire going in the fire place Monday night, which is also near where the fire started. The Smith County fire marshal is also looking into the possibility of electrical problems.

The fire marshal will return to the scene later in the day Tuesday to make the final determination on the cause of the fire.

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
