HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Below-freezing temperatures lead many of us to rely on our utilities to keep us safe and warm. Huntsville Utilities could see record energy use from customers by Tuesday.

The peak use record comes from a cold snap in January 2009, when customers hit a high of 1281 megawatts. Monday's peak use came in at 1223 mW, a difference of just 58 mW.

If you are running into financial trouble with paying your bill, do not wait until cutoff day to let them know. Call and set up a payment plan, or see if you may qualify for assistance. It is important to know that Huntsville Utilities will not turn power off on any customers during this severe cold spell.

Another issue with such frigid weather is frozen water lines. Utility officials recommend letting the faucet run gently; they said the costs are minimal compared to the alternative.

"Let it run, about a pencil-thin stream. Even for eight hours, it will only cost pennies instead of having to repair frozen water lines that would cost hundreds.

So far, the system is holding up. One large power outage was reported in northwest Madison County Monday morning after a connection line failed. The power has since been restored.
