Jackson Co. delegation approves new move project

The project was approved by a 4-2 committee vote Monday. The project was approved by a 4-2 committee vote Monday.

The Jackson County legislative delegation will be moving yet again. A committee approved the $225,000 project by a 4-2 vote Monday, but the decision does not sit well with some board members.

The location of the move has yet to be determined. The delegation said they have several options and are now focusing on trying to figure out the best one. The hope is that the move will let the delegation get out from rent payments of $1,900 per month that is currently paid to maintain offices on the square in Scottsboro.

There was concern to allocate more money to the delegation, expressed by two members, because the delegation purchased a building on the square for that purpose that remains vacant. One board member hoped to move storage from the courthouse and suggested they move there.

Senator Shadrack McGill said all options are on the table, and if they use the money to renovate or purchase a place, then that money will be paid back.

"The office account receives a monthly income from the TVA in lieu of tax money for office expenses and it currently pays the rent, and so it would easily be able to pay that portion back once we get out from under this rent," McGill said.

Senator McGill said the next step is for the delegation to sit down and figure out the best option for the move. No word on what will happen to the building they already own.
