ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

An Athens apartment fire was contained to one bedroom thanks to the quick actions of an 8-year-old who smelled smoke and woke a sleeping parent.

Athens Fire and Rescue responded to the apartment fire Monday.

Fire Chief Tony Kirk said the fire started at 11:20 a.m. at a unit at Fifth Avenue Apartments. A child smelled smoke coming from the bedroom. The child woke the mother, who was asleep on the couch, and called 911.

It appears the fire started on the bed. There were no heaters in use in the room, and Kirk said the cause is under investigation.

There was smoke damage throughout the unit. No other units were impacted.
