MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Kidney disease affects one in eight adults, and Alabama ranks fifth in the nation for the disease. Right now there are nearly 8,000 Alabamians on dialysis, and 3,000 are waiting for kidney transplants.

One Alabama family thought the disease was behind them until they got devastating news just days before Christmas.

Ashlee Abner, 21, received a kidney transplant in 2008 and hadn't had treatment since. Her battle with the disease started at the age of 12.

Now her body is rejecting the kidney and doctors say she needs another one. She started dialysis again Friday, and is back on the transplant list. Her mom says she's been hospitalized three times since November.

She's now at the University of Alabama Birmingham Medical Center and is expected to be released sometime next week.

Abner's mom has started a fundraising campaign to cover prescription costs and traveling expenses back and forth to Birmingham.
