ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

Many people in the Tennessee Valley took to social media to question the flurry of winter weather-related delays announced for next week.

Athens City Schools Superintendent Trey Holladay sums it up as an abundance of caution. Athens was among the first to make the decision to delay classes because of the cold.

"We don't want to subject [students who walk or take the bus] to any type of frostbite or any possibility of health concerns, so that's the main thing," Holladay said.

"The second portion is we want to give our building administrators time to make sure that the buildings are open, that there are no leaking pipes, no problems and make sure the building's heat is at a good level before students arrive," he continued.

In Huntsville, the school system is delaying their start time by two hours on Monday only. Despite the delay, all schools will still open their doors at their regularly scheduled times, giving parents who have to work a place to take their kids.

But not every school district is delaying their start time. In a letter to parents, Madison City Schools Superintendent Dr. Dee Fowler said, "At this point, we do not anticipate any delays to our school schedule. We will continue to monitor the situation throughout the weekend."
