DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - Wendy Lang is going thorough an emotional roller coaster.

"I cry one minute, hysterically and I laugh one minute, hysterically. I don't like myself and I don't like any body around me," she proclaimed.

She described the mood swings that often accompany menopause. "Pendulum clocks don't swing that fast or that hard."

She says she was pre-menopausal in her 40s, but the "big bang," so to speak, hit her by the time she was 50. And life changed for this divorced mother of two.

"The Hallmark commercial comes on and you're going to have to call in sick the next day because you're too depressed to show up. And to think these people have a whole network and it's full of menopausal women watching them," Lang said.

She said the changes aren't just emotional. "Southern women glow. They don't sweat. But menopausal women? They drip."

She said in many ways, control is no longer your own. "You know you can stand there and be totally fine, and that 'gotta go' moment hits and you just have to run. And you have to laugh when you don't make it in time," Lang said.

When it comes to menopause there are no easy answers. But for many women looking for a good recipe the answer comes in the form of a little pill: estrogen.

"Well meaning friends who say, 'Honey, have you taken your pill today?" joked Lang.

Lang has been on estrogen for about 2 and a half years. "You kind of have to laugh at yourself when you're in the middle of a sentence, and it was something very important, and it just went away."

One other remedy that can help, Lang said, is laughter. "A sense of humor helps. You have to laugh at a lot of the things you do or that you're going through, because if you don't you'd never get out of bed."
