FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Charges have been upgraded for the man accused of killing a Shoals man and dumping the body into a river.

Jeremy Williams now faces a capital murder charge for the death of Brioni ‘Bree' Rutland.

Florence Police said that during questioning, Williams stated that he had no money. Investigators said that Rutland's wallet was empty when discovered in late November, and they were able to prove Williams was in possession of over $1,000 after Rutland's death.

Rutland's body was discovered under the Old Railroad Bridge in Sheffield after family members reported him missing several days earlier. He had been stabbed over 30 times and shot in the head. Williams reportedly told police he killed Rutland in self-defense during a confrontation over a gambling debt.
