BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A former Homewood pastor whose wife was found dead inside their home in July has been charged with her murder, police confirm.

Rev. Richard Shahan was arrested late Wednesday in Tennessee for the murder of his wife Karen Shahan. A murder warrant for Shahan's arrest was issued on Dec. 31, according to Homewood police.

Homeland Security ICE agents took Shahan into custody at the Nashville International Airport around 10:55 p.m. Jan. 1.

An affidavit from Davidson County in Tennessee says Reverend Richard Lee Shahan booked a flight from the Nashville International Airport to Frankfurt, Germany. Shahan was red flagged by the computer system and apprehended by Homeland Security agents.

Homewood police believe Shahan was attempting to flee the country to Russia via Germany.

Shahan's wife, Karen Shahan, was found murdered inside their home on Hugh Circle in Homewood in July 2013.

Shortly after his wife's death, Richard Shahan was questioned by Homewood police and released. He said he was visiting his son in Kentucky at the time of his wife's murder.

First Baptist Church of Birmingham, where Shahan worked as a children and families pastor, put Shahan on paid leave after Karen Shahan's murder. Church officials said today that Shahan resigned from his position as of Dec. 31, 2013.

Shahan is in custody of the Davidson County Jail in Tennessee.

The affidavit says Jefferson County has confirmed extradition on Shahan. An extradition hearing will take place in Nashville on January 7 in front of Judge Angelita Blackshear Dalton.

Homewood police are holding a press conference on Shahan's arrest at 2 p.m. FOX6 News will stream the press conference online at www.FoxAlabamaLive.com and the WBRC News app.

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
