BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Do you have your Star ID yet? Federal law requires that every citizen have this ID and the first deadline to get yours is approaching.

The Star ID was developed by the state to meet updated federal identification requirements first passed in 2005. Residents will need these cards in order to board commercial flights and access certain regulated federal facilities.

Current, non-Star ID licenses will still be accepted until Dec. 1, 2014. By that time, anyone born after Dec. 1, 1964 must have a Star ID. Persons born before Dec. 1, 1964 must have a Star ID prior to Dec. 1, 2017.

To obtain a Star ID, residents must go to an issuing office and provide documents to verify your identity, such as a birth certificate, your Social Security card and a document to verify your current address.

To learn more about the Star ID program, find an issuing office and learn about the required documents to get your Star ID, please visit http://dps.alabama.gov/Home/wfContent.aspx?ID=80&PLH1=plhDriverLicense-StarIDStar.
