HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A new year is just around the corner, and law enforcement wants to make sure people celebrate responsibly.

They will be out looking for those who drink and drive by setting up several DUI check points in the city. They will have them in areas they call hot spots -- places that have been labeled as having a lot of crashes and DUI-related incidents.

"We are out here to give a message and it is to be responsible," said Officer Mitchell Chappell.  "It's alright to go out and have a drink and have fun but it gets criminal when you get behind the wheel."

Potential locations for these holiday checkpoints will be Memorial Parkway/University Drive, Drake Ave/Patton Road, University Drive/Sparkman Drive, Andrew Jackson Way/Oakwood Avenue, Holmes Avenue/Jordan Lane and Airport Road/Whitesburg Drive.

Officers said they will start doing the checkpoints around 11 p.m. If you come across one of these checkpoints, make sure to have your license, proof of insurance and registration. Officers will also be checking to make sure that everyone is wearing their seat belt. They said the overall message is "be safe".

"This is a time that everybody wants to go out and take in the New Year," said Chappell. "Just be responsible. Have a designated driver that's not drinking, call a cab or stay at one of the hotels that are offering packages."

AAA Alabama and wrecker services are teaming up again for their Tow for Life program. They will be giving free towing services to keep impaired drivers off the road.
