Amazon to start charging Tenn. residents sales tax

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - If you live in Tennessee and have been contemplating a purchase from Amazon.com, you may want to pull the trigger and do it before midnight! Beginning January 1, the popular website will begin charging Tennessee residents sales tax.

A deal struck between former Tennessee Governor Phil Breadesen and Amazon cleared the website from collecting the state sales tax -- until now. The online retailing giant's brick-and-mortar competitors argued that was not fair.

Current Gov. Bill Haslam eventually reached an agreement with Amazon, which now requires the state to begin collecting sales tax on January 1, 2014.

With that, the company agreed to build two distribution centers in middle Tennessee, creating about 3,500 jobs in Hamilton and Bradley counties.
