Two women shot, one killed in alleged Courtesy Shuttle robbery attempt

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The people at Courtesy Shuttle are picking up the pieces after the owner reportedly shot two women who, police say, were trying to rob them.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan confirms that one person, Achievia Upshaw, 21, has died.

A part owner of the business was inside of Courtesy Shuttle when he heard a noise that sounded like glass breaking near the front door, according to Columbus detectives.

The man confronted the women, shooting Upshaw in the back. The other suspect, Deaisa Ransom who was also shot, is currently listed in critical condition at Midtown Medical Center.

The part-business owner will not be charged.

Upshaw was pronounced dead at 8:21 a.m. at Midtown Medical Center. She died of an apparent gunshot wound to the torso. Her body is being sent to Atlanta for autopsy on Thursday.

Upshaw's mother claims that two men stole her rent money yesterday, and her daughter might have been trying to retrieve the money during today's robbery, according to officials.

One of the women was found at the nearby Brittwood Apartments complex. The other woman was found still at the business.

"We do work so close, I was scared about that," says Beth Myers who works just a few doors down from the crime scene.

Myers says Courtesy Shuttle just opened less than six months ago. While talking to one of the workers this morning, she says they mentioned they have been getting unusual phone calls.

"[Someone has been] asking how many people are on the vans? How late do they stay open? How many people are in the office at one time," Myer's adds.

Myers has worked in this area for over two years. She says she's never seen anything like this happen before.

She describes more of what she says workers told her about the attempted robbery.

"When they broke in, they had a gun, and that's the gun that went off. That's the gun the owner had that shot the two women."

Myers' coworker, Shavon Tolbert, says she recently lost her brother in a violent crime. She proclaims it is time the community do something to stop violent acts like this one from happening.

"It seems like the kids are getting younger and younger as they're committing these crimes. It's time for a change. Enough is enough," Tolbert says. "Time is up for all the killing, robbing, shooting one another. It's time for someone to take a stand and make a change in this community. It's really getting bad."

Tolbert says she is organizing a Stop the Violence Rally in the Chattahoochee Valley area. Anyone interested in participating can click here for details.

Courtesy Shuttle declines to comment at this time.

Police say there may be more people involved in this incident, but they have not been identified.
