HPD: Robberies always rise during the holidays

Armed robberies increase during the holidays. Armed robberies increase during the holidays.
HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

When holiday sales rise, so does the crime rate in the Valley.

Huntsville has seen several armed robberies recently, but police say that additional spike is nothing new. They have increased their patrols to try to prevent future robberies. Meanwhile, local businesses have taken their own precautions to keep themselves safe.

For the last eight years, Angie Singh has served customers at Curry in a Hurry in Huntsville. She's never had a run-in with a robber at her restaurant, but the same can't be said for her neighbor. Saturday night workers at K's Beauty Supply were robbed for the second time in a matter of days.

"Oh my God, that could have been us," Singh said. "I've taken some precautions so far by putting up cameras in my place."

In the past 10 days, there have been 5 armed robberies in Huntsville. On Dec. 20, the Subway on Old Madison Pike was robbed by two men. Three days later, K's was hit for the first time. On Dec. 27, a masked man robbed the China House next door to the Subway. K's was targeted again on Dec. 28. Lastly, on Dec. 29, the Dollar General on Drake Avenue was robbed by a man who got away on a bike.

HPD said there have been 45 robberies so far this year.  At the end of 2012, there were 42.

That's far too many for Singh, who said the area isn't bad, but she doesn't want to solely rely on cameras to keep her safe.

"There are all kinds of people over here, and the younger crowd tends to hang out front, smoking cigarettes and troubling the people who pass by, which is a big concern," she said. "The strip needs some help. It needs to be updated with cameras on the outside, and I definitely think a security guard will help."

No arrests have been made in the robberies. Huntsville police are still investigating.
