AAA offers free towing for New Year's drivers

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Many Alabamians will be toasting the New Year Wednesday, and as always, AAA cautions the revelers to be smart and stay away from the wheel after the champagne toast.

To save lives and promote safe driving this New Year's Eve, AAA Alabama and wrecker services across the state will again offer the Tow-for-Life program, providing free towing services to keep impaired drivers off the road.

This is the 27th year for the program, which is free to anyone, AAA members and non-members alike. It begins at 6 p.m. Dec. 31 and continues through 6 a.m. New Year's Day.

To receive free towing on New Year's Eve:

  • Call AAA Alabama at 1-800-222-4357 (AAA-HELP) and ask for Tow-for-Life. The vehicle must be operable to qualify.
  • The operator will ask for the driver's name, home address, phone number and exact location of vehicle and driver.
  • A tow truck will be dispatched; upon arrival, the wrecker driver will ask for ID and the keys to the vehicle.
  • The vehicle will be towed to the home of the driver or owner if the owner is present.
  • Towing is provided at no charge for up to 10 miles.

    A ground search ensued that lasted about four hours and covered approximately six miles, ending a few hundred yards east of Hays Mill Road where the suspects were caught in a hunting stand/shoot house.
