Nearly a dozen families are getting help from the Red Cross after a massive apartment fire in Calhoun.

On Saturday, seven fire departments were called to the Green River Apartment Complex on W. 3rd Street.

The fire chief is calling this the biggest apartment fire they have ever dealt with.

Neighbors alerted each other after when the blaze started around 3:30 on Saturday morning.

Crews worked the scene for hours. Thankfully no one was injured.

The early morning blaze led to a dog rescue and a change of plans for Sadie Tanner, who was ready to celebrate her birthday.

It was a close call for Lucy, who belongs to the Tanners.

The family escaped safely only to realize they didn't have their pup - the one thing Sadie wished for on her special day.

"One child, whose birthday is today, lost her Christmas and her birthday," said Belinda McLaughlin. "She said that the only thing she wanted was for her doggy to be ok."

Firefighters reunited Lucy and Sadie after finding the dog under a couch, without a scratch.

Animal Shelter volunteers are giving the Tanners, and other families, pet food and supplies to take care of their four-legged friends.

Local churches and the American Red Cross are stepped in to give out food, clothes, shelter, and a one of a kind birthday celebration, complete with cake and a candle.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Anyone who would like to donate clothes or other items to the families affected can drop them off at St. Sebastian Church in Calhoun from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Some community members have also created a Facebook group. If you have a question about how to donate, click here.
