HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Huntsville Police identified the pedestrian killed in a fatal wreck involving a concrete truck.
The wreck happened on Drake Avenue just around 10:15 Friday morning. Authorities said the pedestrian technically died at the scene but began breathing again and was transported to Huntsville Hospital in critical condition.
Police said the pedestrian, 59-year-old Robert Fitzpatrick, later died from his injuries at the hospital. Investigators believe Fitzpatrick intentionally stepped out in front of the concrete truck to commit suicide.
The driver of the concrete truck spoke with a reporter at the scene and said that he could not avoid the collision. The driver was shaken up, and although he won't face any charges, he said he can't help but feel guilty about what happened.
Police closed a section of Drake Avenue from Clopton to Hale while they investigated the circumstances surrounding the crash.
A friend of Fitzpatrick was with him minutes before the accident. She said that he told her he was just going out for a walk. After she heard sirens, she said she "came outside to see what was up because it is so close to my house. Then I walked down there and recognized his shoes and his hat. It is just so terrible."
Authorities said no one else was injured in the wreck and no charges are expected to be filed. This case remains under investigation.
