BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

While most families unwrap presents covered in decorative paper and sparkling bows on Christmas morning, the Beckham family brought home another kind of gift: a two-year old girl named Ellie adopted from China through Lifeline.

"It's amazing how you can love a child you've never met," said Ellie's father, Heath Beckham.

"We had several miscarriages and we realized it probably wasn't an option to have another biological child. Our plan all along was that we thought we would have more children of our own--and we did. We just didn't know where she was. She was in China. Its really neat seeing that our family is probably complete now," Heath added.

Now a proud big brother, 9-year-old Luke Beckham traveled with his family to pick up his new sister in China.

"It feels pretty awesome," Luke said. "Pretty much its like your rescuing somebody because she's spent two whole years--her whole entire life--in an orphanage."

That's a daily reality that a number of children face globally.

"There's 150 million orphans in the world and only 1 percent will ever be adopted," Heath said. "So when you think of those numbers, they are just staggering. We can't do for the whole world, but we try to do for one what you wish you could do for the whole world."

And so far, the family says Ellie is the best Christmas present they could have dreamed of.

"People have been asking us, 'What do you want for Christmas?'" Heath said. "What do we want for Christmas? We got it. To be able to be home Christmas Day makes the whole story complete."

This Christmas, the Beckham's asked that other families with difficulty having children of their own consider adoption through Lifeline--and provide more orphans with homes. You can find out more about Lifeline at Lifelinechild.org.
