A couple from Alabama was killed while changing a tire on I-40 overnight.

Investigators have identified the victims as George and Carol Kittle, both 66 years old, of Hollytree, Alabama.

The deadly accident happened on westbound I-40 at the Catawba County line. During the investigation, I-40 westbound was closed between exits 121 and 119.

WBTV's Steve Ohnesorge was the only reporter at the scene overnight. He learned the couple was almost finished changing their tire when a truck hit and killed them.

According to investigators, the victims were parked at the very end of the ramp to I-40 at the 121 mile marker (Longview).  They were off the roadway, on the shoulder, and both were wearing safety vests.

Investigators said the couple was almost finished changing their tire – the bad tire was in the back of their truck, the lug nuts were on the new tire, and the jack was down.

Harvey Lee Stevens, Jr, of Oakridge Tennessee told investigators he saw someone in a vest for just a second, knew he had hit something, and then pulled off the side of the road. His truck died, with extensive damage to the front passenger side.

Stevens got out of his truck and walked back, where he told investigators he saw one of the victims and called 911.

Investigators said the victims were thrown 100 feet when they were hit and there was damage to their truck - a dent, scrap, and the side mirror broken.

Stevens is charged with two counts Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle.

In the pictures attached to this story, the gray truck belonged to the victims. The blue truck belongs to Stevens.
