FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Some major changes could soon be a reality for tourism in the Shoals. A draft resolution has been created that would change where lodging taxes would go.

Instead of lodging taxes going directly to the tourism board, the act would have the money funneled through City Hall first. This would give city leaders the authority to divert some of the money to other areas as they see fit.

The resolution isn't sitting well with everyone. There is a clause which would allow Florence, Lauderdale County and the county commission to dissolve the tourism board once it's free of debt – moving all of their physical assets to the city.

While some of the changes seem favorable, the movement of the lodging tax funds and the potential disbandment of the tourism board have people like council member Barry Morris concerned. Morris said the current board has been extremely efficient and really have gone above and beyond, boosting the lodging tax revenue in the Shoals.

"I'm somewhat skeptical of the language in the resolution that gives the municipality the authority to dissolve the tourism board. The resolution itself doesn't make clear why that particular item is in the resolution," Morris said.

Florence Mayor Mickey Haddock has scheduled a meeting with the tourism board to discuss his proposal on Dec. 30. A specially-called tourism board meeting to discuss the topic will be held Jan. 3.
