MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Marshall County's chief prosecutor is back home after the unique experience of evaluating court proceedings in Cuba for the upcoming trials of the 9/11 masterminds.

Steve Marshall calls being in the same area as those awaiting trial as "surreal."

Khalid Sheikh Mohammad was one of five people in court last week as the federal government prepares to bring the case against them for the 2001 attacks.

Marshall was one of 13 people selected to observe the proceedings at Camp Justice. For five days, Marshall watched the motion hearings as part of the court's attempt to provide transparency and help ensure the suspects received due process.

While in Cuba, Marshall worked closely with family members of some 9/11 victims who also made the trip. Marshall described the scene.

"Very similar to what we see in local cases," he said. "You know, the discussion about the defendant – that it's not about the victims. They very much wanted to hear some talk about the crime and not the rights of these defendants in the course of this proceeding. Beyond that is the delay that they have had of seeking this case to be over with."

Their wait could still be even longer; as Marshall does not expect the case to be ready for trial in 2014.
