HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Again this week, flu and the respiratory virus, RSV, are raking in big numbers, keeping back-to-back lab techs busy running tests.

"Flu has actually increased four times the amount that we've seen over the past week and then RSV has doubled," said Dr. Sarah Pettigrew.

This week 69 tests came back positive for flu. Last week only 18 children had the virus.

Ninety tests came back positive for RSV. Just last week it was 45. Doctors said cold temperatures are contributing factors and if you're contagious it's likely to spread.

Getting a flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself but you can still get the flu even though you have the vaccine.

"It's not 100 percent protection. We try to pick the strains we think are going to be the best, like what's going around the community, but sometimes we pick incorrectly and the strains that are in the vaccine aren't necessarily the ones that are going to cause a lot of illness," said Pettigrew.

Doctors say they're seeing strain a the most and the current vaccine does cover it.
