The Ben Hill County EMS is on their way to a paperless system by 2014. Leaders say the upgrade will save time and money.

In just a few days, Ben Hill County Emergency Medical Services will do away with filling out paperwork while trying to care for a patient. Now they'll use iPads to take patient information.

"We'll be doing the process in the truck with the patient. Everything will be time stamped. Everything will be where we need it to be. All we have to do is upload it when we get done. All our signatures that we normally get on paper will be on the I-pad." said Mark Shealy, Ben Hill Co. EMS Director.

EMS Director Mark Shealy says 5 new iPads will go into the department vehicles. Shealy says paramedics are currently learning how to use the new technology.

"It's going to make the process a lot easier and faster. More accurate reports. We'll have quicker reimbursements, its going to be a good thing all the way around," said Shealy.

He also says this will help cut down on paperwork by at least 5 hours a day. Shealy says they've been planning to make the transition from paper some time ago.

"Ben Hill County started a project paperless a year or so ago. We're moving everything electronic file. Doing away with paper, saving a little money," said Shealy.

These new iPads will also help paramedics get to the next call faster.

"Everybody is real excited, we are ready to get away from paper and do things a little quicker and a little more streamlined," said Shealy.

Shealy says these iPads were paid for though Splost funds. Ben Hill County EMS will be completely paperless by January 1, 2014.

The Ben Hill County Manage, Frank Field, say the county is also planning to purchase a new ambulance and hire additional staffing.
