HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Many people enjoy the Christmas holidays, but for others it can trigger depression.

The holidays can be stressful, especially with the traditional rush to get things done by Christmas. Psychologist Dr. Kenneth Sullivan said some people tend to over-extend themselves and the holidays become more work than joy as a result.

Sullivan also said the blues can come from grief and loneliness. He said the best rule of thumb for almost every case is to make a plan to do something different.

"Sometimes holiday blues can come from loneliness – that they don't have people. In which case, you need a plan. You need to fill the time and you need to fill it with something that gives you as much joy as you can get. Even if it means going out to the movies so as not to be alone, or volunteering somewhere and being with people," he said.

The Mayo Clinic offered more tips on combating the holiday stress and depression:

  • Acknowledge your feelings.
  • Be realistic.
  • Reach out to others.
  • Don't abandon healthy habits.
  • Take a breather – rest is beneficial.
