Editorial "Viewer Feedback: End the Conversation/Gambling"

Posted: Updated:
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Our editorial earlier this week asking our legislators to again allow Alabamians to vote "yes" or "no" on legalized gaming elicited the following feedback via emails received and comments on wsfa.com and our WSFA 12 News station Facebook page…here is just a sampling:

Bobby responded with, "Hurray for you to say on the air that Alabamians should have a say on gambling. We need to legalize it, have a gaming board to control the fairness of the games, and of course, above all - tax it."

Melissa provided the following, "Thank you so much for your editorial on gambling in Alabama. This has gone on too far with no benefits to Alabama at all. I personally do not gamble but many of my friends and family go to all the Indian Casinos and Florida and anywhere else they can to play the Lotto and gamble........Our schools are suffering because we have no money and the people who sit up and judge are no friends of the state."

Wanda adds:" What makes you think that a statewide vote would be completely honest with all the gambling places that have been shut down? I can see those folks doing their best (any way that they can) to make sure that the vote went their way. In other words, buying votes to get their way and intimidation in another ways to make sure the vote was for gambling. Those of us who do not want or feel that gambling in our state is not the answer would definitely be outnumbered."

Lastly Mary writes, "Thank you so much for your editorial on the gambling issue. I know this is not always a popular subject to discuss. I do not understand the few people in this state that are so against the issue and I reiterate the few people. Without a doubt a gambling bill would pass 10/1 if the people were given the opportunity to vote. It's a shame our legislators doesn't trust the judgment of the voters but only want to control the issue by not allowing a vote"

As always, we encourage and appreciate your feedback.
