FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Search and rescue is a serious job that requires practice and patience year-round.

Florence Fire & Rescue demonstrated the nerve and skill required in a training session held Wednesday. The Heavy Rescue Team drills four to five times per year, doing everything from building base-camp to responding to life-like situations – all so they can be ready to go at a moment's notice.

"We have so many different facets of rescue that we partake in. It's very important that they touch on each of those throughout the year," said Lieutenant Michael Mann.

Wednesday the focus was on GPS training. Crews spent nearly eight hours in the park drilling possible scenarios and techniques to use in the field.

"We have to go out whether it's hot, cold, snowing, raining; people still expect us to come out and do our jobs," Lt. Mann said.

Team leaders said their rescue teams not only respond to disaster situations in the local community. They are ready to assist wherever they are needed. They said a lot of the crew members are passionate about rescue and will drop everything to pack their bags and go where needed.
