LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A Lauderdale County woman is charged with animal cruelty after animal control officers said they stepped in just in time to save one of two severely neglected horses.

One officer spotted the horses while en route to another call. He said one horse was already lying on the ground.

34-year-old Betty Sue Ivey Hinton is charged with two counts of animal cruelty. She is out on a $2,000 bond.

Authorities removed one of the two horses from the home late Tuesday afternoon. The horse has been placed into foster care with Singing River Equine Rescue and is being monitored by a local veterinarian.

Officials said the horse is being treated for an abscess on his shoulder, heat and swelling in his lower leg, and a hoof injury on top of being malnourished. In a statement, Singing River Equine Rescue said in part, "The next ten days will be crucial in his recovery as we closely monitor how he responds to the refeeding regimen... He has a long road ahead, but we are optimistic about his chances for survival."

Authorities said the other horse found on the property did not survive.

Thursday morning WAFF 48 News spoke with Betty Sue Ivey Hinton who said the horses were not hers and she is not guilty of the charges she is facing. Hinton said she is an animal lover and was watching one of the horses for her ill father and the other was dropped off at her property. We will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they become available.
