ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

The City of Athens wants utility customers to be on guard once more for phone calls from people trying to take their money.

Customers have made Athens Utilities aware that someone is calling them claiming to be from 'Athens Utilities Billing Center.'

The caller claims there is an overdue balance that must be paid within the hour or power will be cut off. Athens Utilities Customer Relations Manager Amy Golden said the caller is working with a second person.

The first person informs you your bill is past due. If you offer to pay immediately, you are either given a 1-800 number to call or directly transferred to the second party, who asks for your debit or credit card information.

Athens Utilities wants customers to remember that they do not call customers directly to seek credit or debit card information.

When in doubt of the legitimacy of a call, hang up and call Athens Utilities directly. Do not use a number provided to you by the person who initiated the call. Use a published number for the business.

If you have questions about your bill, you are asked to call 256-233-8750.
