MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Madison County leaders were asked about how -or if- they conduct background checks into youth coaches.

Earlier this week, a Toney youth basketball coach's criminal background and murder charge were discovered. Mario Robinson remained coaching for weeks after his arrest, and it was soon learned a background check had not been performed by county officials.

We reached out to the Madison County Recreation Department to better understand any policy on background checks. The department declined to comment and referred us to Madison County administrator Kevin Jones.

We emailed, called, and visited Jones's office, on Monday. After a second phone call, we were told we needed to talk to Madison County's attorney, Jeff Rich. Rich said he was unsure of whether or not a written policy exists that requires a background check but would look into it. He said he was also in the process of contacting the Madison County Recreation Department to find out more.

We confirmed through the Georgia company that does national screenings for the county that the Madison County Recreation Department conducted only one check of one coach over the last eleven months.
