HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville residents will get one more chance to voice their opinions on a proposed sales tax increase ahead of an expected Thursday night vote on the matter.

The City of Huntsville must raise $125 million in order for the state to match those funds and begin work on seven major road improvement projects. Many residents agree the roads need repair, but some are concerned with how the city wants to come up with the money.

Mayor Tommy Battle suggested raising the sales tax by one percent. At a work session Thursday, the mayor and other city leaders heard mixed reception to the plan from residents. The city council is expected to vote on the tax increase Dec. 19.

City councilman Richard Showers is allowing folks in his district to weigh in again in advance of the vote. He is holding a town hall meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday night at the Richard Showers Center.
