PHENIX CITY, AL -

The suspect who lead Phenix City Police on a high speed chase ending in two separate crashes last night, Dec. 13, has been identified as 42-year-old Willie Thomas.

Thomas is now in custody in the Russell County Jail.

The crashes occurred at around 9 p.m. along 14th St. in Phenix City. Witnesses tell News Leader 9 a Phenix City police car crashed into a storage building near 14th St. and 13th St.

The owner of the building says she received a call immediately after the incident. She was informed that a police car has crashed into her building, and was stuck inside.

She says the building is a storage facility for food that will be donated to Feeding the Valley.

The black sedan that Thomas was allegedly driving while attempting to flee from authorities crashed about a half mile further down the road on Broad St. across from Central Baptist Church.

A witness said the suspect crashed into a white pick-up truck at the Broad St. intersection and went off the road, ending the pursuit.

The officer who crashed into the storage unit is expected to recover from his injuries.  The suspect has been arrested. The third driver of the white pick-up truck is also expected to survive.

Thomas fled after committing a traffic violation, and then failing to stop when told to pull over.
