HOOVER, AL (WBRC) -

It's a scene that is hard to understand: watching children flee from their school while a shooter is inside.

Shaundra Lewis has three children of her own and to hear of the most recent school shooting in Colorado is disturbing.

Friday, a student entered Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Col. with a firearm. Two students were seriously injured, one seriously.

"It really saddens me and hits me every day to know that someone could send their child to school and not be able to pick them up in the evening time," said Lewis.

Mo Canady was watching the shooting in Colorado unfold. As the Executive Director of the National Association of School Resource Officers he has experience dealing with these type situations.

He said Friday's shooting is an example of the importance of having school resource officers.

"It helps the school to be able to respond better in an incident like this," said Canady.

Canady assists in the training of those officers.

"What we train them to do is to not sit or stand and wait for help bit to be able to address the incident immediately and go and find the shooter and end the situation," Canady said.

After the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary he said phones rang off the hook from those looking at bringing on more school resource officers. And with Friday's incident he doesn't see that slowing down.

"I think today's unfortunate incident will probably continue that push," said Canady.

When it comes to training Canady said similar incidents he's been in and those like Friday's will help in future training tactics.

"For many days after that we're debating the incident and looking at how could we have done it better? What improvements can we make?," said Canady.

Over the past year NASRO has been working on ways to bring in more school resource officers.
